7th National Microchip Month
Thursday, May 27 2010
We love our pets but are we protecting them?
We’ve always seen ourselves as a nation of animal lovers and now it seems it’s official with research released today showing over three quarters of pet owners admit to spoiling their pets.
But while we might be buying our pampered Moggy the best cat food money can buy and making sure Rover has the biggest and best toys on the market, it seems we are struggling with some of the more important aspects of being a responsible pet owner.
A recent national survey, which has just been released ahead of national Microchip Month starting found only half of pet owners have micro-chipped their pets, with a third saying they can’t afford to.
Nearly half of pet owners felt helpless when their pet disappeared, while 40% had sleepless nights and a third even felt physically sick.
And to reinforce just how harrowing it is to wake up to find your pet has gone, the average pet owner spent up to 17 hours looking for their lost pet.
A quarter of those surveyed said their disoriented animals were eventually found wandering the neighbourhood, which shows if they had been microchipped chances are they could have been reunited much quicker.
We at Putlands say, “National Microchip is great for raising awareness of this important and inexpensive way of permanently identifying your pets however there are lots of chips available and it can be hard to know which is best. Microchips can range vastly in terms of quality and readability so it is important to get the right one. It is also vital that there is a robust database available for the lifetime of your pet to ensure peace of mind and make sure your pet can be found quickly”
To celebrate the 7th National Microchip Month, Putlands Veterinary Surgery will Microchip your pets for £10 instead of £17 for the duration of the month of June.
