Blue Tongue Newsletter

We are well under way in our vaccination regime for 2009. So far in excess of 6,500 doses have been administered and we expect that March will bring the number of animals vaccinated to about 10,000.
Sheep need one injection; cattle that were vaccinated twice last year will need one injection this year. Calves born since last year’s vaccination programme will need two injections, four weeks apart. Goats and alpacas also need two injections if they were not vaccinated last year, but a single injection given twice a year has been advised in these species as there is no specific vaccine licensed for them.
All youngsters (calves, lambs, kids and cria) need their first injection at 4 weeks of age.
There is a plentiful supply of 50ml dose bottles at present, but the 20ml vial will not be available until the second week of March (the existing batch has an expiry date of 28th Feb 2009). If individual doses are required please telephone us with your order and we will let you know the day when a vial is being opened and shared between you.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping this devastating disease out of the U.K.
